New york: UN Secretary-General António Guterres marked the International Day of Peace on Sunday with a warning about the urgent need for global peace, urging people worldwide to silence guns, heal divisions, and foster hope. According to Ethiopian News Agency, Guterres emphasized the severe impact of conflict, noting that lives are being destroyed, childhoods lost, and human dignity disregarded amidst the ongoing violence. He highlighted that the effects of conflict extend beyond battlefields, contributing to displacement, poverty, and instability worldwide. The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981, later designated as a day of non-violence and ceasefire. This year's theme, "Act Now for a Peaceful World," stresses the importance of collective action to prevent conflicts, combat misinformation, and support peacebuilders, particularly women and young people. Guterres pointed out the connection between peace and sustainable development, noting that most of the countrie s facing significant development challenges are also experiencing conflict. He called for dialogue and respect to counter racism and dehumanization. The observance of this year's International Day of Peace coincides with the UN General Assembly's annual high-level week, where global leaders discuss pressing issues such as wars, climate change, gender equality, and the implications of artificial intelligence. Guterres highlighted the need for a united international effort for peace amid growing divisions and instability. He concluded with a call to action, stating, "Where we have peace, we have hope. Peace cannot wait - our work starts now."
