President Attends Launch of Seychelles Public Transport Corporation’s First Electric Pilot Buses

Victoria: President Dr. Patrick Herminie attended the launch of Seychelles Public Transport Corporation's (SPTC) first electric pilot buses at the SPTC New Port Bus Depot. The event was also graced by Vice President Mr. Sebastien Pillay, Minister for Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation Ms. Veronique Laporte, other Cabinet Ministers, SPTC Board Chairperson Mr. Andy Moncherry, SPTC CEO Mr. Jeffy Zialor, and SPTC staff members. According to African Press Organization, the introduction of these electric buses is a significant step toward the Government's commitment to promoting electric vehicles and enhancing the sustainability of public transport. The new buses promise a quieter and cleaner operation, equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, passenger information systems, USB charging facilities, CCTV cameras, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Minister Laporte emphasized that the launch signifies the beginning of a broader initiative to reduce import dependence, lower transport emissions, and create a mo re efficient and environmentally conscious public transport system in Seychelles. Emphasizing the importance of affordability, the Government also plans to gradually reduce the standard fare to six rupees by 2028. Minister Laporte stated that transitioning to electric buses involves more than just acquiring new vehicles. Key considerations include understanding Seychelles' unique operating conditions, such as steep gradients, narrow roads, and the intricacies of electricity and charging requirements. These buses are part of a pilot project that will operate on selected routes, allowing SPTC to evaluate and make informed decisions on future electric bus specifications. Minister Laporte highlighted the long-term vision of introducing approximately 250 electric buses, with a target of 100 buses operational by 2028. The project is funded by the Seychelles Government's Development Grant to Public Enterprises and involves technical and project support from PUC, local and international consultants, the Indian Hig h Commission, and Ashok Leyland India. The ceremony included the presentation of tokens and certificates to the winners of the EV Bus Wrapping Competition. Miss Kayla Geldenhuy won in the under-18 category, while Mr. Steven Gonzalves triumphed in the above-18 category. President Herminie and guests concluded the event by touring one of the electric buses. Technicians provided insights into the buses' technical features and operations. SPTC encourages commuters to use the facilities and provide feedback to enhance future services.
