Cape town: Mauritian startup Black Swan emerged victorious at the MEST Africa Challenge 2025 Grand Finale held at Innovation City, Cape Town. According to African Press Organization, the event was organized by the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST Africa) and powered by Absa Group, serving as a leading Pan-African pitch competition. This platform is vital for early-stage startups seeking funding, mentorship, and global visibility, with the 2025 edition focusing on FinTech innovations that drive financial inclusion and digital transformation across Africa. Black Swan, co-founded by Derick Kazimoto, aims to make Africa bankable by addressing the challenge of fragmented, informal data that makes millions of consumers and MSMEs invisible to formal lenders. Their platform transforms this fragmented data into instant credit intelligence to enable precise affordability assessments and inclusive lending at scale. Kazimoto emphasized that their mission is aligned with the shift from informal, col lateral-heavy lending to data-driven credit in Africa. The MEST Africa Challenge 2025 attracted numerous applications from Absa's priority markets, including Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, Seychelles, and Mauritius. Ten startups reached the Cape Town finale after a rigorous selection process, where they pitched to a panel of judges comprising investors, Absa executives, and industry leaders. Black Swan's solution was recognized for meeting a clear need and integrating well with services across Absa's markets. The Grand Finale celebrated African ingenuity, with founders presenting scalable solutions to challenges in payments, credit, insurance, and trade finance. Ashwin Ravichandran, Portfolio Advisor at MEST Africa, highlighted a shift towards building for scale, with founders prioritizing compliance, interoperability, and cross-border readiness. As the winner, Black Swan receives US $50,000 in equity investment, entry into the MEST Portfolio, and the opportunity to pilot solutions wit h Absa business units across Africa. Tawanda Chatikobo, Head of Digital for Absa Regional Operations, emphasized that Black Swan's solution complements services across Absa's markets and enhances customer experiences through innovation. Now in its seventh year, the MEST Africa Challenge acts as a launchpad for early-stage founders across the continent, offering visibility, mentorship, and partnerships. Tamu Dutuma, Head of Strategy and Transformation for Technology at Absa Regional Operations, noted the technical discipline and scalability of Black Swan's approach. Since 2008, MEST Africa has supported over 2,000 entrepreneurs and invested in over 90 startups. The MEST Africa Challenge remains a flagship competition for identifying and supporting high-potential technology ventures across Africa.
