Lagos: Ecobank Nigeria has unveiled the fourth edition of its annual Adire Lagos Fair, providing a direct solution for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking market access and growth.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the exhibition features over 120 exhibitors from across the nation, addressing key challenges faced by these businesses while also promoting Nigeria's rich cultural heritage.
The four-day event, held at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Lagos, attracted vendors, fashion and cultural enthusiasts, creatives, and shoppers. Originating from Abeokuta, Adire Textile is an indigenous indigo-dyed cloth that uses different wax-resistant methods to create designs.
Ms. Omoboye Odu, Head of SMEs Partnerships and Collaborations at Ecobank Nigeria, mentioned that the fair was the bank's way of promoting the country's cultural heritage while supporting SMEs to scale up to global markets. Odu highlighted how the fashion industry has embraced Adire globally, listing top brands selling the fabric in international markets. She noted the intricate artistry from the early producers of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.
Odu stated that the global fashion industry is valued at over $100 billion, with African fashion estimated at around $30 billion. She emphasized the role of organizations like the IFC and the World Bank in promoting African fashion. The bank is enhancing the annual fair, with increasing participation from big industry players among the exhibitors.
She highlighted that 20,000 people visited the fair in 2024, and this year is expected to draw even more visitors. Odu pointed out that Adire serves as a homegrown national heritage uniting the nation, noting the diversity of fabrics from various regions, including the North, East, and outside Lagos.
She explained that Ecobank aims to provide SMEs with access to finance, market, capacity development, governance platform, and structure. Last year, the highest-selling vendor achieved six months' worth of sales in just four days at the fair.
Odu added that the bank has developed an app linking global vendors and buyers to the Nigerian market. The fair, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative for SMEs, allows them to display their wares free of charge, promoting unity and the economy of Nigeria.
Exhibitors expressed how customers are embracing Adire due to new innovations. Ms. Fadilat Lawal of Sanyaolu Trading Stores in Abeokuta spoke about the evolving love for Adire, making Nigeria more globally relevant. Ms. Cynthia Uma of Cecesignature Unisex Clothing in Lagos highlighted Adire's global acceptance and its revenue-generating potential for her business.
