Asaba: Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has approved the release of N6.7 billion as the state's counterpart funding to access the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) grant for educational development. The governor also sanctioned the construction and rehabilitation of several road projects, intending to connect communities, enhance infrastructure, and boost economic activities across the state.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the approvals were made by the State Executive Council presided over by Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori at Government House, Asaba. The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, stated that these decisions are part of the administration's ongoing efforts to enhance road connectivity in both urban and rural communities, while simultaneously strengthening the basic education sector.
Aniagwu explained that the road projects span the three senatorial districts and include both new constructions and major rehabilitations, focusing on economic viability, accessibility, and long-term durability. He, along with the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, highlighted that the exco also approved significant investments in road infrastructure to accelerate economic activities and improve the quality of life.
The commissioner further noted that the payment of the Universal Basic Education counterpart funding will enable the state to draw matching grants for the construction, renovation, and equipping of public schools. Aniagwu added that Gov. Oborevwori has instructed the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education to assess the buildings and furniture needed to enhance the primary and secondary education sectors in the state.
He emphasized that the dual focus on roads and education aligns with Gov. Oborevwori's M.O.R.E. Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructural renewal and human capital development. Aniagwu also listed several approved road projects, including the reconstruction of failed sections of the Uzere-Asaba-Ase Road, Aboh-Akarai concrete road with a 100m bridge across the Okiri River in Ndokwa East, Eku-Osubi Road, and Okpanam-Ugbolu Road.
In response to price fluctuations, some contracts awarded during the last administration have been reviewed upwards. These include the Ejeme-Aniogor-Obidugbo-Ekuku-Agbor Road Phase 1 and others. The approvals also included the appointment of several traditional rulers, reflecting the administration's commitment to local governance and cultural heritage.
