Benue: The Benue Government has reiterated its stance on the establishment of state police as a sustainable solution to the persistent insecurity in the state. Gov. Hyacinth Alia stated this during a town hall meeting with President Bola Tinubu, who visited the state to commiserate with the people of Benue following a recent attack on a community.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, more than 200 people were killed, scores injured, and houses and properties destroyed in the June 13 attack on Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. Alia noted that while there were concerns about the implementation, the Federal Government could spell out guidelines and regulatory frameworks to prevent its misuse.
The governor urged the Federal Government to consider establishing a special intervention fund for communities affected by the incessant attacks. He emphasized that such funds would significantly support the rehabilitation of those displaced from their ancestral homes and help restore the livelihoods of farmers and their families. He acknowledged the efforts of security agencies in Benue but called for more security measures to address the ongoing challenges, describing the attacks as a calculated attempt to displace the people of Benue.
Alia expressed gratitude for the visit of service chiefs and other security formations, which he said had given the people hope for lasting peace. He thanked President Tinubu for his visit, expressing optimism that it would help bring an end to the security challenges that have persisted. Despite the heavy hearts over the loss of lives and homes, Alia noted that the President's visit ignited hope for a better future.
The governor concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives during the attack and expressed hope for a better Benue.
