Accra: Mr Ebenezer Anderson Ayiku Akuaku, the Assembly Member for the Lomobiawer electoral area, has made a significant contribution to the Caesar Puornya community by providing a potable water system. The initiative was part of his birthday celebration, during which he extended pipe-borne water to the area and installed a 5,000-litre storage tank.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Akuaku, despite being visually impaired, has actively engaged in developmental projects since his election as assemblyman. These include extending electricity, building toilet facilities, improving sanitation, and facilitating free enrolment in the National Health Insurance Scheme for his electoral area. During the handover of the water facility to the community elders, Mr Akuaku announced that residents would have one week to access the water for free. After this period, the elders would regulate its use to generate funds for maintenance. He revealed that he invested approximately GHS 15,000 of his funds, alongside contributions from others, to establish the water system. Mr Akuaku expressed gratitude to the electoral area elders for their support and also acknowledged the assistance of the Ghana Health Service District Director.
Mr William Okronipa, a community elder, requested the establishment of an assembly member's office to facilitate community support and development. Madam Debora Quarshie, a unit committee member, praised Mr Akuaku for addressing the water challenge, noting that community leaders had previously discussed finding funding solutions.
Community members expressed relief, telling Ghana News Agency that the lack of pipe-borne water forced them to fetch water from the distant Volta River at Kpomkpo Panya, which was unsafe for drinking. The new water system is expected to alleviate these challenges and improve sanitation. Resident Madam Bernice Buertey expressed satisfaction with Mr Akuaku's leadership, stating, "my vote for him as assembly member hasn't gone to waste."
