Lagos: Air Peace Airline has announced the commencement of direct flights from Abuja to Heathrow Airport in London starting October 26, following a grant secured from British authorities. The Chairman of the airline, Dr. Allen Onyema, made the announcement during a news conference held in Lagos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Onyema revealed that the grant was awarded due to the international aviation community's confidence in Air Peace. He further announced the airline's plans to expand its schedule by the end of the year to include destinations such as Congo, Gabon, and Brazzaville. The new Abuja to London Heathrow flights will operate four times a week, while the Lagos to London Gatwick route will be serviced three times weekly. Additionally, Air Peace plans to introduce direct flights to the Caribbean, including Antigua in September, with Barbados to follow.
Onyema emphasized the airline's commitment to increasing its fleet capacity, mentioning the acquisition of Boeing 777 aircraft and other new planes through dry lease financing. The airline currently boasts 36 outrightly purchased aircraft and four on wet lease, with new additions expected soon. He assured passengers of enhanced on-time services, highlighting an impressive on-time performance record of over 85% since May 12. The airline is also upgrading its customer service to further enhance passenger experience.
Addressing concerns over flight delays and cancellations, Onyema clarified that 94% of such disruptions were due to external factors such as weather, infrastructure limitations, bird strikes, and inadequate landing equipment. He noted that the airline has recorded over 30 bird strikes this year alone, which can impact flight schedules. Onyema assured that cancellations are only made when absolutely necessary, and he highlighted the airline's robust safety measures and international validations.
Furthermore, Onyema announced plans to restart the China route soon and expand other regional and international routes. He expressed gratitude towards President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, for their efforts in facilitating business operations within the aviation sector. He noted that the sector is thriving, with Nigeria poised to receive dry lease aircraft due to the minister's dedication. Onyema concluded by encouraging Nigerians to support and patronize Air Peace as it continues to grow its international presence.
