Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that he will not interfere in the operations of the nation's anti-corruption agencies or influence their investigations involving any individuals, whether they are former or current government officials. The President made this commitment during a meeting with the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption (AUABC) State Party Review Team, which was led by Madam Seynabou Ndiaye Diakhate, at the Presidency in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, the AUABC team visited Accra upon President Mahama's invitation to conduct a peer review of Ghana's anti-corruption framework and performance. The review mission aims to evaluate Ghana's implementation of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC) as a State Party to the Convention.
President Mahama emphasized his dedication to maintaining the independence of Ghana's anti-corruption agencies, asserting that political will is essential for success in combating corruption. He stated, "I have told the public and assured my Attorney General and Minister of Justice that I am not going to interfere in their work. If the anti-corruption agencies go after anybody, I am not going to try and influence them to drop any investigation against anybody, including those who served in the previous regime, many cases of whom we are currently investigating."
Madam Diakhate, representing the AUABC, congratulated President Mahama on his re-election, noting that it reflected the renewed confidence of the Ghanaian people in his leadership. She acknowledged the commendable progress made during his first tenure in the country's development. She also highlighted that the AUABC's presence in Accra underscores President Mahama's commitment to combating corruption across Africa. She remarked that Ghana has consistently demonstrated its attachment to accountability as a State Party to the Convention. The Review Mission to Ghana is part of the African Convention on Prevention and Fight Against Corruption, which supports member states in their anti-corruption efforts.
The AUABC delegation included Board Members Madam Annouz Nadia and Madam Yvonne Mutepuka Chibiya, along with Madam Martha Munthali, Senior Policy Officer on Economic, and Madam Stephane Ndilmbaye, Documentalist and Office Assistant.
