TRNUC to hold amnesty hearings

The Truth, Reconciliation and National Unity Commission (‘TRNUC’ or ‘Commission’) has scheduled amnesty hearings to take place between May 31, 2022 and June 2, 2022 for four of its cases.

The amnesty hearings are scheduled pursuant to Section 3(7)(e)(iii) of the TRNUC Act, 2018 (“Act”), which mandates the Commission with the authority to decide whether or not to make a grant of amnesty to those found to be perpetrators before it.

To be eligible for the grant of amnesty pursuant to Section 12(4) of the Act, a petitioner must provide a full and frank disclosure of their culpable acts and offer sincere apologies to the victim(s). Of the four hearings, three will be held in closed session at the request of the victims.

Case 16 Brian Victor, Case 56 Elizabeth Family & Case 108 Myrna lssacks

The first amnesty petition to be heard pertains to cases 16, 56 and 108 which concern the deaths of Michael Hoffman and Sonny Elizabeth, and the serious assault of Brian Victor, which took place at Sans Souci in 1983. Jemmy Marengo and François Lesperance have chosen to petition for amnesty for their involvement in this incident.

Case 205 Sidna Umbricht & Case 207 Aruna Couchene

The next cases to be heard, Cases 205 and 207, concern the death of Claude Monnaie, who died a few weeks after the truck in which he was sleeping was set on fire by state agents in 2003. Four perpetrators have chosen to petition for amnesty for their participation in this incident. These persons are Jemmy Marengo, Marc Pool, Roland Gertrude, and Jose Hollanda.

Case 149 Rolderic Larue & the Eulentin Family

The following day, the Commission will conduct a hearing for Case 149, which pertains to the death of Dhamendra Eulentin, whose body was found in the sea at Providence in 2007. Four perpetrators namely, Jemmy Marengo, Marc Pool, Alain Jeannevol, and Ken Jean-Charles, have come forward to petition for amnesty for their participation in this incident.

Case 90 Livette Hermitte & Case 270 Gaetan Didon

On that same day, the Commission will conduct a hearing for Cases 090 and 270, both of which concern the death of Ricky Hermitte, who was killed in 2006. Four perpetrators have chosen to petition for amnesty for their involvement in this incident. They are Jemmy Marengo, Marc Pool, Alain Jeannevol, and Ken Jean Charles.
