South Africa and Seychelles will deepen and widen the scope of their bilateral cooperation and strengthen the Pretoria-Victoria axis of regional cooperation in the field of education.
These two decisions were the main outcomes of the bilateral meeting that Seychelles’ Education Minister Dr Justin Valentin had with the South Africa Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, on the sidelines of the 41st General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) that is going on in Paris.
At this meeting, held at Hyatt Madeleine Hotel last Saturday, the two ministers agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in education between South Africa and Seychelles as a way to promote South-South cooperation and regional integration.
The two countries, which are both members of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), intend to push forward this agenda through experience sharing and leading some initiatives that will benefit the whole region of South-eastern Africa.
Minister Motshekga said her country is looking forward to learning from Seychelles’ experience in early childhood development while Minister Valentin opined that Seychelles would like to explore the possibility of cooperation between the University of Seychelles (UniSey) and South African universities. The two countries will undertake exchange programmes for their teachers and educational experts.
They will also co-chair an initiative that will involve all SADC countries.
