The Seychelles Inter Faith Council (Sifco) is urging every place of worship to uphold prayers and denounce acts of hatred and violence regardless of their nature and form.
“Our journey for long-lasting respect and tolerance must continue. Peace will prevail,” Sifco says in a statement following the recent acts of vandalism at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
The full text of Sifco’s statement reads:
“The Seychelles Inter Faith Council expresses its concern at the inhumane act of vandalism at the Roman Catholic Cathedral which took place on Friday June 10, 2022. Our country cannot tolerate such degrading planned acts of destruction and disrespect for our neighbours and institutions, not least places of worship.
“Sifco believes strongly that forgiveness is essential for peace. However, we support all avenues which aim at bringing the perpetrator(s) to justice. The Law of the Land must not be taken for granted. This incident, regardless of its roots, must not be allowed to be repeated.
“Our diverse culture and faiths stand as a beacon of hope for unity and peace. We pray that every place of worship will uphold prayers and denounce acts of hatred and violence regardless of their nature and form. Our journey for long-lasting respect and tolerance must continue. Peace will prevail.
“We pray for renewed strength and resilience to Bishop Alain Harel, Father David Alcindor, the rest of the clergy, religious communities and faithful of the Roman Catholic Church in Seychelles.
“Sifco reiterates its commitment to promoting inter- and intra-faith dialogue and national unity as well as favouring bridges among the various religious organisations of the Republic of Seychelles.
“In the light of this, the Seychelles Inter-Faith Council aims to fight against all forms, causes and effects of oppression that hinder the progress and development of every person in collaboration with national authorities.”
