Seychelles: The government of Seychelles is taking significant strides towards enhancing public safety by seeking a partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This collaboration aims to implement a comprehensive Community Policing initiative across the nation, reinforcing President Dr. Patrick Herminie's commitment to public safety.
According to African Press Organization, the initiative will focus on fostering stronger partnerships between the Seychelles Police Force and the communities they serve. Key components of the plan include expanding crime prevention through greater public participation, enhancing officer capacity with specialized training, and modernizing policing with advanced equipment and technology.
This development is part of a broader effort by President Herminie since taking office to emphasize community policing. Earlier this year, the Cabinet approved the restructuring of the Seychelles Police Force into a regional model. This shift replaced smaller district posts with fully equipped regional stations, highlighting the importance of community policing and strategic partnerships. Commissioner of Police Godfra Hermitte, sworn in March, has prioritized community policing, pledging to maintain strong connections between officers and the public.
President Herminie has actively supported this vision by visiting Seychelles Police Headquarters and the newly inaugurated Baie Sainte Anne Police Station. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to public safety, overseeing the donation of 40 body cameras to officers and addressing key challenges such as drug-related offences and violence.
The partnership with UNODC, renowned for its expertise in community policing reforms, will enable the Seychelles Police Force to enhance training, systems, and equipment. This collaboration underscores the government's resolve to restore public confidence in law enforcement, marking a significant step forward in their efforts to ensure a safer community.
