Seychelles: The government of Seychelles has taken a decisive step towards enhancing public safety by approving a partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to implement a comprehensive Community Policing initiative across the nation. This initiative, approved during a recent Cabinet meeting, aims to strengthen the collaboration between the Seychelles Police Force and the communities it serves.
According to African Press Organization, the initiative will focus on crime prevention through public participation, officer capacity building through specialized training, and modernization of policing with improved equipment and technology. The decision reflects President Dr. Patrick Herminie's commitment to public safety and marks a significant step forward in community policing.
The move is part of a broader effort to restructure the Seychelles Police Force into a regional policing model, emphasizing community policing, accountability, and strategic partnerships. This approach was reinforced when Commissioner of Police Godfra Hermitte, upon his appointment, prioritized deepening community policing efforts to maintain a strong connection between officers and the public.
President Herminie has actively supported this initiative, visiting the Seychelles Police Headquarters to oversee the handover of 40 body cameras and inaugurating the Baie Sainte Anne Police Station on Praslin. These efforts aim to bring essential services closer to the communities and enhance the resources available to law enforcement.
The President's dedication to addressing drug-related offences, violence, and other criminal activities is evident in his direct approach. He has called on the Police Force to better utilize its resources, improve operational efficiency, and maintain the integrity that fosters public trust.
With the support of the UNODC, the Seychelles Police Force plans to design and implement training, system upgrades, and other initiatives to bolster its community policing efforts.
