Project launched to promote peace and combat violence

A project has been launched with the aim of promoting peace and supporting the fight against all forms of violence taking place in the country.

The Peace Ambassadors project was launched on the International Day of Peace (September 21) by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family during a unique show under the theme ‘Dealing with Poetry’ put together by the Bling Bling Poetry Association.

The show took place at the National Theatre at Mont Fleuri.

‘Peace begins with a smile,’ said Mother Theresa. Have you noticed that nowadays with the lifestyle we have adopted, we forget to smile and oftentimes a small discussion ends with a fight or even a fatal accident.

Every week, unfortunately, Seychelles is registering quite a number of cases related to violence.

According to the principal secretary in the Family Affairs department, Clive Roucou, 141 cases of violence were recorded from January to June 2022.

“We cannot continue to live like this. The Peace Ambassadors project is targeting agents of peace, that is students from Primary 5 to Primary 6, and Secondary 1 to Secondary 5. Additionally, the project will support the fight against all forms of violence taking place in the country.  We have to join hands to combat this ill from our society and we ask the public to join in the movement! Peace be with us all,” PS Roucou said.

After the official launch, children – Zanfan Bling Bling – recited their poems about the values of life and sang ‘Heal the World’.

Local poet Raspyek, the founder of Bling Bling, started the show with a powerful poem on peace and how we should eliminate all sorts of racism, hate and envy.

Other participating artists were Mercenary, Isham, Damasy, Stephanie Joubert, Empress Ania, Terence Madeleine, Michel Savy, Vincent Milius, Loura Barra and Reuben Lespoir.

The National Theatre was full of guests including ministers Justin Valentin and Patricia Francourt.

Hoping we all join in the movement and be inspired by the lyrics of John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ – “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us. And the world will live as one.”
