PM Abiy Says Gov’t Striving for Sustainable Peace in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed told the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) that his government has been taking several measures to ensure sustainable peace in Ethiopia.

Responding to questions raised by members of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) today, the premier explained at length the value of peace and the demerits of war.

According to him, the instabilities caused by armed groups emanate from personal interests instead of national interest.

These destructive elements have been spreading conflicts and undermining peace in the country.

In its effort to ensure sustainable peace in the country, the Government of Ethiopia has been taking several measures since the reform.

Following these, many have accepted the peace call extended by the government while some have continued with their destructive activities, the premier noted.

The premier said the government is making efforts to address the demands of the people in Amhara region noting that the people in the region have developm
ental, constitutional reform and administrative boundary demarcation related questions.

Elaborating on the efforts being made by the government to address the grievances in the Amhara region, the PM categorized those questions as development, good governance and constitutional amendment.

With respect to infrastructure, he said over 3,200 kilometer roads have been constructed over the past five years in the Amhara region.

Of these, 1,300 kilometers were completed and became functional.

The first of its kind bridge in Ethiopia was built with 2.4 billion Birr in the region, the premier pointed out, stating that the bridge is 50 meters wide.

Most of the roads constructed in the region also interconnect zones with other zones, districts with districts, it was learned.

Regarding the issue of constitutional amendment, he said a National Dialogue Commission has been established to deal with the matter as the question has been raised by others too.

“Concerning the administrative boundary demarcation, the govern
ment is committed to ensuring that this matter is settled through dialogue, aiming for resolution that ensures lasting peace. Engaging in conflict brings no benefits. It only exacerbates our present difficulties.”

The government of Ethiopia is always committed to peace, Prime Minister Abiy affirmed to the MPs, calling on armed groups to accept peaceful path rather than destructive activities.

“I can confirm that the federal government and regions are prepared to engage with all actors who are willing to lay down their weapons and participate in the peaceful political engagement. We are committed to foster dialogue, reconciliation and inclusive process to achieve lasting peace and stability.”
