Cuba will continue to improve its long bilateral, mutual and historical relationship with the Republic of Seychelles.
It was the newly accredited ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Republic of Seychelles, Martha Hernández Caneiro, who made the statement to the press after presenting her credentials to President Wavel Ramkalawan yesterday morning at State House.
She was accompanied by her husband, Tomas Mendez, who is also the Minister Councilor at the Cuban embassy.
Also present during the accreditation ceremony was the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ambassador Sylvestre Radegonde.
Ambassador Caneiro said that among the many areas of mutual cooperation shared between Cuba and Seychelles and that were discussed with President Ramkalawan, includes the continued cooperation in health, environment and agriculture.
She added that Cuba will also seek to update the memorandum of understanding on sports that it has with our country.
“My main plan is to work to improve our mutual relations. We have a long historical relation and we can continue to improve in this sense,” Ambassador Caneiro said, noting that the relation between Cuba and Seychelles is excellent.
Although she did discuss the issue with President Ramkalawan, Ambassador Caneiro said that the closing of the Seychelles’ embassy in Cuba has no effect on the relations and will also not affect future relations between our two countries because both countries are in the same position with regard to economic situations and also understand why certain decisions have to be taken.
“For now we have not talked about this subject. Maybe in the future we can talk about this subject. But for now, everything continues like always,” she added.
Ambassador Caneiro, who will also work to revive the Seychelles-Cuba Friendship Association (Seycufa), also paid a courtesy call on Vice-President Ahmed Afif.
She is the 12th ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to be accredited to the Republic of Seychelles. She replaces Juan Humberto Macias Pino who was accredited to Seychelles on December 6, 2016.
The ambassador will be based in Victoria.
Cuba and Seychelles established diplomatic relations in 1978.
