“On this auspicious day, 1954, the United Nations signed the most significant Convention that speaks to children addressing all their rights to life, education and well-being and rights to protection, recognises the rights of children. This year’s Universal Children’s Day is commemorated under the theme ‘Inclusion for every child’ which is encapsulated in the 34 articles of the convention covering the rights of children.
“The theme reminds us that we need to ensure decisions made and practices at all levels do not discriminate against children especially the disadvantaged ones. It is a call to raise consciousness of all world leaders to provide them to reconcile themselves with current affairs, that of decisions and practices that are causing much more chaos resulting to much suffering to children. This is evident in countries where there is famine, displacement of children, because of war and other natural catastrophes, social ills because of substance abuse and crimes against children all of which affect their wholesome development.
“Dear children, our government is mindful of your needs. Legislative frameworks, policies and programmes are in place, all aimed at ensuring your rights of inclusion in matters of concern for your wholesome development. My ministry along with all other partners will continue to advocate for an inclusive society where your well-being is given the highest priority.
“You have started the conversation with us; we hear your voices and concerns. I urge you to make use of all the available platforms to bring matters of concern to the attention of your parents, significant others, leaders at your school and policy makers to ensure that your contributions are taken on board to make the required change in the appropriate applicable spheres, be it in your homes, schools, communities for your betterment.
“We value your aspirations and ideas to be more innovative to help shape the new tomorrow, a tomorrow that you will take charge as leaders to follow through. Continue to shine, be visible, and be relevant in making the difference you want to see.
“I wish you happy Universal Children’s Day.”
