Cape Town: The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST Africa) has announced the launch of the MEST Africa Challenge 2025, in collaboration with Absa. This year's competition is dedicated exclusively to FinTech startups, highlighting founders who are innovating in the realms of money movement, management, and insurance across Africa. Applications for this prestigious challenge will be open from 30th July to 26th September 2025. From these applications, 20 semi-finalists and 10 grand-finalists will be selected, with the overall winner receiving a US $50,000 equity investment and an opportunity to pilot with strategic partners on a larger scale.
According to African Press Organization, the MEST Africa Challenge is a significant platform where Africa's most daring ideas have the chance to scale. Ashwin Ravichandran, Portfolio Advisor and MAC Lead at MEST Africa, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Absa, noting that it provides essential support to visionary founders. This collaboration connects startups to vital capital, expertise, and networks, transforming promising startups into sector-leading businesses and fostering inclusive growth across the continent.
MEST Africa, with a history of investing US $30 million in over 90 startups and 2,000 entrepreneurs, stands as one of Africa's most active early-stage tech investors. The 2025 edition of the MEST Africa Challenge strengthens this impact through its strategic partnership with Absa, aligning the competition with the bank's digital-finance priorities.
Early-stage startups in FinTech and high-value, value-chain solutions are invited to apply for MAC 2025. Eligible companies must be active in at least one of Absa's priority markets, which include countries like Botswana, Uganda, Mauritius, Seychelles, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia, and Ghana. To qualify, startups must be three years old or younger, demonstrate a minimum monthly recurring revenue of US $5,000, and have raised no more than US $1 million to date. Ventures should have at least two co-founders and be able to pitch in English, with Delaware registration considered an advantage though not mandatory.
Founders interested in participating can submit a short online application, including a three-minute video pitch, via https://apo-opa.co/40P2V41 starting from 31st July, 2025. Virtual semi-finals are scheduled for late October, with the top ten teams presenting live in Cape Town at the Grand Finale in late November.
