Message for International Mother Language Day

“The international days observed by the United Nations and its specialized institutions are meant to highlight the important aspects of human life and history . It is also an opportunity for public authorities and civil society to organize awareness-raising activities and to mobilize resources.

“This international day represents an opportunity to inform the general public about the terms linked to important matters such as fundamental rights, sustainable development or heritage. In order to achieve this, education should be seen as the key.

“The theme for the 24th edition of the International Mother Language Day is “Multilingual education is a necessity to transform education”. The objective of such a day is to recognize the positive impact of languages and multilingualism on inclusion. Time to promote our national languages as a basis to favor solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

“Multilingual education emphasizes the language that the child has mastered well and other languages are introduced progressively. I ask the nation of Seychellois to pause and reflect on the reason for such a day and to protect the mother tongue of the majority of Seychellois, which is Creole, to prevent its disappearance.

“We deserve to adopt an inclusive approach, which means we don’t leave anyone behind and transform education to guarantee the right of individuals to learn throughout their lives. This is because the global context is one that is critical and complex, characterized by bands; mass movements, crises such as recession, Covid-19, increasing inequality and the climate crisis. To overcome these challenges, education should become a priority, to accelerate progress towards the realization of sustainable development goals.

“Happy Mother’s Day, too. »
