Karting Dave Rene and Christian Bastienne claim final championship round

The final round of the 2022 karting championship was held in beautiful weather last Sunday with battles in both the classes providing some exciting racing to the end at the Champions Park Raceway, Roche Caïman.

However, the day belonged to the newly crowned 2022 champions, with Liza Rene-Cosgrow retaining the title in the Masters class beating Dave Rene by 6 points, while Fabio Williams retained the Intermediate title by beating Christian Bastienne by the same margin.

In the round itself, Dave Rene took victory in the Masters class after a hard-fought battle with Liza who took second place, while Rennick Bonnelame took a well deserved third place with Marc Decly fourth and Steven Rosalie fifth.

In the 10-lap final, Dave and Liza fought bumper to bumper as they opened a gap over the others, and in turn the other group with Rennick, Marc and Steven also had the same battle among themselves for third place. In the end it turned out to be one of the most thrilling races of the year.

In the Intermediates class, Christian Bastienne dominated from early on and was never headed as he cruised to victory. Behind him, however, Eric Maillet had to fend off a hard charging Fabio Williams who had started last from the pit lane due to a late arrival, with Dean Maillet and Denilson Melanie also in the mix. Eric kept his nerve and took second place with Fabio close behind while Dean faded to fourth and Jean-David Melanie overtook Denilson for fifth position. Carlos Quatre motored to seventh but was also pushed all the way by Terence Anderson in eighth.

The fastest times of the day were set by Dave Rene in the Masters class with a lap time of 34.212 seconds, while Fabio registered 43.998 seconds in the Intermediates class.

All eyes will now be focused towards the season-ending kart Grand Prix scheduled for SundayNovember 6 starting at 8.30am where all the kart categories will be competing together for the first time this year.

One of the main highlights of the final will be the first appearance of this year’s Academy drivers who have now graduated to full time karters, they will be the Bambinos (8–10-year-olds) and the Cadets (11-16+)

This event will bring to a close the 2022 kart racing season and will also include the annual prize-giving ceremony at the end of the day.
