International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2021

The main activity on the department of risk and disaster management’s calendar for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2021 was a validation workshop for the drafting of the Seychelles’ National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategic Plan (2021-2030).

The purpose of the Seychelles’ National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategic Plan (2021-2030) (NDRRSAP) is to provide all of Seychelles’ disaster risk reduction (DRR) stakeholders with a 10-year roadmap towards their collective mission and vision for DRR in Seychelles using the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) as an international standard benchmark.

Done virtually in view of Covid-19 restrictions, the half-day workshop was run by consultant drafting the plan, Divina Sabino who presented the situational analysis and the proposed plan of action for the department for the next ten years.

The team from DRDM was available to respond to questions that were specific to their mandate and functions in relation to the work they engage in, in conjunction with stakeholders.

A good number of stakeholders attended the workshop and sought clarifications as well as provide feedback on the draft plan.

The stakeholders in attendance included the department of environment, department of climate change, department of tourism, Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Trade, Ministry of Education, Public Utilities Corporation (PUC), international consultants working for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and others.

It is expected that there will be further feedback from stakeholders following the workshop.

Work on the plan started in April this year and will be handed to DRDM for final approval towards the end of the month of October for implementation starting the first quarter of 2022.
