Construction begins on La Digue hospital

Construction work on a new hospital for La Digue kicked-off yesterday. The contractor commissioned to undertake the project, GICC, has officially taken over the site and preparatory work has begun.

Pegging of the boundaries and demarcation of various key facilities of the hospital are being done.

The new hospital will be built next to L’Union Estate and will be a state-of-the-art facility equipped with wards, X-ray facilities, dental, ultrasound and haemodialysis facilities as well as an operating theatre for minor interventions, laboratory, maternity, pharmacy and child care facilities among others.

The construction of the hospital is being made possible through a donation of approximately US $4 million from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government and the La Digue Hospital Fund.

On behalf of government, the President of the Republic, Wavel Ramkalawan, has expressed his satisfaction that despite certain setbacks, the construction of the project is now under way and hopes work progresses swiftly according to plan in order to ensure the La Digue community benefit with a new modern health facility.
