Mont Fleuri and Anse Boileau secondary schools are the grand winners of the U18 school basketball championship held last weekend at the Victoria Gymnasium.
A total of seven boys’ and three girls’ selections registered for the competition which was jointly hosted by the National Sports Council (NSC), the Seychelles Basketball Federation (SBF) and the Ministry of Education.
In the boys’ final, Mont Fleuri defeated Plaisance, while Anse Boileau also beat the same Plaisance school in the girls’ final.
The seven boys’ teams were divided into two groups where Anse Boileau, Perseverance, Plaisance and Anse Royale battled in group A, while group B featured Praslin, Mont Fleuri and Pointe Larue.
The top two finishers in the boys’ groups played in a cross knockout, while the three girls’ selections engaged in a mini-league where the top two clashed in the final.
In the boys’ group A, Plaisance finished on top with six points from three wins in as many matches played, beating Anse Royale 31-5, Perseverance 52-3 and Anse Boileau 26-5.
In group B, Mont Fleuri dominated with maximum four points from two wins in as many matches played.
In their first match against Praslin, Mont Fleuri won 18-11, before winning their second match 42-5 over Pointe Larue.
In the semifinals, Plaisance beat Praslin 22-15, while Mont Fleuri eliminated Anse Boileau 33-14 to set the final scene.
In the tightly-contested final, Mont Fleuri of coach Gregoire Scholastique had the upper hand, narrowly winning 27-25 to be crowned champions.
In the girls’ competition, Plaisance defeated Perseverance 24-2 in their first match, before narrowly losing 14-16 to Anse Boileau in their second match.
In the third match of the group, Anse Boileau defeated Perseverance 27-3 to book their final spot against Plaisance.
In the final, Anse Boileau defeated Plaisance 12-10 to take the cup home.
