Amhara: Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh emphasized that the Amhara Region has been working industriously to achieve peace and prosperity. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new Amhara Regional Police headquarters, DPM Temesgen highlighted the region’s ‘dual struggle’: a determined fight against extremism, crime, and lawlessness, alongside efforts to combat poverty and underdevelopment.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Deputy PM described the ongoing police reform and digital transformation initiatives as tangible outcomes of this dual effort, marking a significant step toward strengthening institutional capacity and improving public service delivery. He commended the Amhara Regional Police for their dedication and sacrifice in upholding law and order, noting their ongoing efforts to confront criminals, extremists, corrupt actors, smugglers, and gangs, efforts he said are crucial to safeguarding public wellbeing.
The Amhara Regional Police has embarked on a transformative journey to become a model of public service and effective law enforcement. Today marks a milestone with the inauguration of its reform program, digital initiatives, and new headquarters. Temesgen emphasized that this transformation extends beyond infrastructure and technology. It is about rebuilding public trust, protecting citizens, upholding justice, and ensuring lasting peace.
The police must serve the public with impartiality, free from political interference, religious bias, corruption, and tribalism. This reform is a call to build a force that will write a proud chapter in our history. The DPM called on the police to remain steadfast in their responsibilities, highlighting the need for swift and creative implementation of the reforms to meet the region’s evolving security challenges.
On the broader issue of national peace and stability, DPM Temesgen reiterated the federal government’s continued efforts to foster reconciliation. While some armed groups have begun to disarm and join the peace process, he warned that those who reject peaceful solutions will face legal consequences. Calling the reform “historic, timely, and inspiring,” Temesgen pledged the federal government’s full support for its successful implementation, aiming to build a safer and more prosperous Amhara Region.
