Ambassador Ian Madeleine, the new permanent representative of Seychelles to the United Nations, presented his credentials to the UN secretary-general, António Guterres, on September 16, 2021 in New York.
The UN secretary-general expressed admiration for the level of development and social cohesion that he had witnessed during a private visit to Seychelles and praised government policies for the achievement.
The exchange between SG Guterres and Ambassador Madeleine primarily touched upon post Covid-19 recovery plans and equitable vaccine distribution.
The ambassador reaffirmed Seychelles’ commitment to actively contribute to the work of the United Nations, especially in areas such as climate change, the Blue Economy, maritime security and placed particular emphasis on the importance of establishing a Multidimensional Vulnerability Index for small island developing states.
Ambassador Ian Madeleine has worked in the Foreign Service for the past 10 years, occupying several positions in the Foreign Affairs department. Prior to his appointment as ambassador, he was serving as the director for Regional Affairs, and was also responsible for developing regional and maritime security cooperation.
Seychelles will be celebrating 45 years as member of the United Nations tomorrow, September 21, 2021.
