Adidome: Adidome Senior High School in the Central Tongu District has emerged the winner of the 2025 Volta Regional edition of the Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge. The Challenge is an initiative of the Energy Commission of Ghana aimed at promoting innovation and sustainability among the youth.
According to Ghana News Agency, the regional competition, held at OLA Girls Senior High School in Ho, brought together several senior high schools across the Region. This year’s theme, ‘Sustainable Energy for a Healthier Future,’ inspired students to develop practical solutions to challenges in food security, waste management, and healthcare through the use of renewable energy.
Adidome SHS distinguished itself with a project titled ‘Plastic Waste Conversion’ – a smart waste management system designed to automatically segregate plastic waste from other types of refuse within the school environment. The segregated plastic is then processed and repurposed into useful items such as pavement blocks, addressing both environmental concerns and infrastructure needs in a sustainable manner.
The project earned Adidome SHS a total of 75.2 points, securing their position as Volta Regional Champions and qualifying them to represent the region at the zonal level of the national Renewable Energy Challenge. The Energy Commission, in a social media post, praised the students for their creativity and commitment to solving pressing environmental problems using clean energy solutions.
In a statement following the announcement, Mr. Dodzi Addison Mornyuie, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Central Tongu, commended the students for their outstanding performance. ‘Congratulations to Adidome Senior High School for emerging as Volta Regional Champions in the 2025 Renewable Energy Challenge. Their smart plastic waste segregation and recycling project earned them top honours and a spot at the zonal level of the national competition. Central Tongu is proud of your innovation and excellence,’ he said.
The Renewable Energy Challenge, now in its sixth year, continues to play a vital role in fostering innovation, environmental awareness, and technical skills among Ghanaian youth, contributing to the broader goal of achieving a sustainable energy future for the nation.
