Twenty-two (22) kilogrammes of waste were picked up along the Anse Major trail on Saturday in a clean-up organised by Apex company.
From the start of their journey at 9am the nearly 20 participants collected waste such as hard and soft plastics as well as mixed materials found along the trail.
Five participants were from Apex company itself while others were members of the public who had registered for the clean-up hike.
The company’s marketing manager, Tara Port Louis, stated that the activity was conducted as part of the ‘Ceres beach clean-up programme’ which has been launched for this year.
“We started the first one in June at Beau Vallon. This is the second one in the series,” she noted.
The activity is part of the company’s retail marketing strategy called ‘impact marketing’. The aim of the activity is part of the Ceres juice initiative at reducing plastic waste thus introducing its eco-friendly straws for some of its juice packs.
“With this move from Ceres, we have organised an environment-friendly event that supports this initiative,” said Ms Port Louis.
“Ceres wants to be part of the community and to be part of sustainable development,” she further added.
The clean-up hike ended at noon and at the end the team had collected 22kg of waste. When sorted, the waste materials comprised 7kg of soft and hard plastics, 7kg of glass materials and 8kg of mixed materials.
Ms Port Louis stated that the area where the most waste was collected was the first viewpoint on the rocks and in the bushes. The mixed waste collected were broken slippers, shoes, aerosol cans, plastic bottles and cleaning products.
“There were a lot of things that you wouldn’t imagine being found on a nature trail,” said the marketing manager.
Apex clean-up activity will continue throughout the rest of this year, targeting Anse Royale beach, Copolia trail, Au Cap beach and Salazie trail.
